I took the S3 for its 5k mile checkup on Saturday. While I waited for my loaner, I said hello to my sales guy (mistake) as he tried to get me into a lease on a leftover S6. Luckily, I had shit to do so I could not say yes to a test drive.

I’ve only ever seen A3/A4 loaners, but the guy wheeled around a Q3. At first glance I thought “ick” as the overall shape is a little awkward, and the bulbous rear end is pretty ugly in person.

Once inside the car I was still unimpressed. One of the biggest gripes with the S3 is that it does not have the same “premium feel” as other Audis. That fact is even more apparent in the Q3. A/C controls are way too low, and there seems as if there is less room in the trunk than there is in the S3!

Mrs. Trip described the driving dynamics as “grumpy”. She went on to say, that when I press the gas it’s as if you’re asking a small child to do something, then he or she responds with a whiny “I don’t wanna!”. I had to agree. The engine does sound like that, however it did get up and go and it handled pretty damn well for an ugly Golf on stilts.

Although I was not a fan of the Q3 overall, it did make me appreciate my own car that much more once I got it back.

Thanks for reading! I’m currently doing anything to distract myself from accepting the fact that I’m back at work!

Haha try driving a Chevy Spark as a rental, that car could make you appreciate ANY other car as your daily driver. And I always find it funny that CUV style vehicles have so little usable trunk space (unless you can fold flat the back seat). Makes me wonder why people would ever want them over a large sedan.

lol yea, I really can’t understand the CUV craze. I just kept thinking “well, I could have a loaded Golf for less money, or for a bit more money I could have a base all-road.

In Oct 2014 our A4 lease was up and we drove both the A3 and Q3. I have to say that I was not impressed with either. I wanted to drive the S3 but they didn’t have any. Actually all they had was the one 1.8 Premium A3 we drove. We ended up with the Q5, which I love. I think a SQ5 may be next.

when I press the gas it’s as if you’re asking a small child to do something, then he or she responds with a whiny “I don’t wanna!”

This may be the perfect way to sum up my driving experience in both the A3 and Q3.

Yea the A3 is nothing special, I noticed a tiny ding right after I took delivery of the S3. They gave me an A3 as a loaner while the fixed it, a decent amount of power but, the car was just all around “soft”. The magnetic dampeners available on the S models make all the difference. I drove an SQ5, while they were readying my car. Tons of fun, if I had to have an SUV that would likely be the one. A good friend has a Porsche Macan, I would take the SQ5 over it any day.

Your S3 looks so great in that picture.

Tire bloom or camera issue?

I really have been pushing for the S5, but we kind of need a more full backseat option. So we could possibly go S4 but I think we like having the Q5 so much that the SQ5 is probably the one. Still have some time though.

Thanks! I was painting one of our upstairs rooms, and saw the sun hitting it just right, so I snapped a quick pic. iPhone pic, no blooming just yet.
